World Aids Day is only a few months away and for many of us this month is also the start of the holiday season and the coming of a new year. However, this month should also be a time to reflect on the many lives that are lost each year to HIV/AIDS. According to statistics, by the end of 2007, an estimated 230,000 people were living with HIV/AIDS in the Caribbean. Some 20,000 people were newly infected during 2007, and there were 14,000 deaths due to AIDS. Higher prevalence rates are found only in sub-Saharan Africa, making the Caribbean the second-most affected region in the world. In Brooklyn, N.Y., 30% of the 10,000 residents with AIDS are from the Caribbean. According to the Pan American Health Organization, about 360,000 people in the Caribbean are infected with HIV.
In an effort to raise awareness as to the growing epidemic of HIV/AIDs in the Caribbean, Legends Entertainment is pleased to announce the first World Aids Day International Calypso Competition, Caribbean Aids Conference & Benefit Concert (WADICCC). On December 1, 2009, Reigning Calypso Monarchs along with specially invited musical guests within the Caribbean and around the world , will convene at Carnival City, Warner s Park St. Kitts, to compete in the first ever International Aids Awareness Calypso Competition and Benefit Concert. In addition, world leaders on HIV/Aids will meet for a two day conference to address the severity and prevalence of HIV/AIDs within the Caribbean.
This is a global call to action to get involved and become active participants in helping to stop the spread of HIV/AIDS. The objective is to establish a framework that offers real solutions, collective responsibility and accountability. We anticipate thousands of people to attend this event and I ask that you join us and become a part of the solution. Let's help stop the global spread of HIV/AIDs together.
